The original wash basin would have used a pitcher to provide the water, hence why you didn't use a lot. Part of someone's job to see that the pitcher was full before it was needed and then the basin was taken and dumped by hand. These sets were very common at auction and in basement storage in my area. The furniture that held them was called a wash stand, very often had a towel rack and sometimes a mirror mounted on it.

Funny!
Not many people today realise the reason for having the "conventional" wash basin.
It was so you can run in enough water (with plug in situ) to just cover the hands.
Some of the deep basins and the square shaped basins, designed only for fashion, either don't have a plug or they take a huge amount of unnecessary water. A retrograde step in my opinion.

If you shut off the water and then drained the toilet or the bidet and used a compostable bag in it you would then just need to find sawdust. Maybe shred that ugly vanity.
