The tiny ant thing may be a wide range up cycle. Many people here were talking about the large numbers of tiny ants they were encountering before the ground froze solid and the world around us became a polar bear playground. Haven't heard any comments lately.

Let's start a new movement, Rman.... "Build your house in a compost pile!"

Wilbur, there are all manner of changes and cycles in the operation of a compost heap. I don't pretend to know half of them. Time and patience is often rewarded... the heap goes through its change and comes back to the ideal thermophilic environment you are aiming for.
I don't know categorically about those ants, but there are ecological processes in any compost heap that happen without our knowing....it all comes good in the end.

Good grief Wilbur, what I would give to see ants outside. It is -30 F here. Worms come and go based on temperature and other conditions, probably just part of the normal cycle.

In the past few weeks we have noticed an increase in tiny ants and a decrease in composting worms. We live in SC where temps have been in the mid 50's to mid 60's. Will the ants help or hinder the compost and have the ants caused the worms to decrease?
