Hello all, it's good to read about souls out there with a down to earth philosophy of life.
My question: My husband and I are interested in building a humanure system on our newly aquired land in the Ozark Mountains. In our research on natural living we've talked to a couple of folks that "live off the land" as we hope to do and they warned us about the presence of the Ecoli virus when fertilizing your vegetable gardens with human waste/compost. Has anyone heard anything about this?
It's certainly not going to prevent us from building a composting toilet, but we'd like to know if there are any extra precautions that need to be taken and if should we limit our humanure compost to just the flower garden?
I assume that a well maintained temperature in the compost pile would kill off any harmful bacteria. Right or wrong?
Funny I never thought that shit was that scary! ;o)

Please enlighten us.

Blessings to all and thank you Mr. Jenkins for your sensible and desperately needed ideas.

140oF will kill E-coli in minutes, that is why you
want to get the piles mixed with carboneous stuff
so that the organisms in the soil can work their
magic..Aging also kills E-coli,thats why Mr.Jenkin
s lets it mature for 2 years before putting it on
Food crops..read his book all the way through and
build the humanure compost mansion too.you can use
steer manure for your garden or green manures to
build up your soil till the super duper human poop
is ready,,use lots of mulch too..please garden
regeneratively!!!

You can read about the pathogen issues at http://www.weblife.org/humanure/chapter7.html. Better to get the entire book. Get it at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0964425890/qid=1066007787/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-8411993-5887266?v=glance&s=books
