Dear Colleagues

Today, the 21st November, 2007, sees the launch of the International Year of Sanitation by the UN in New York.

The need to improve sanitation for billions of unserved poor people was the passion that drove the late John Pickford when he founded WEDC back in 1971. John ensured that sanitation was central to WEDC's work in Education, Training, Research and Consultancy and it is with that inspiration behind us that WEDC will increase its efforts in support of the International Year of Sanitation.

We are pleased to announce that from January 2008 WEDC will be managing a helpdesk service (based on the highly successful WELL enquiry service model) to provide access to information and technical support in sanitation for southern governments, national and international NGOs.

We now provide a direct link to the wide range of resources we have developed over the years - we have a new INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SANITATION page on the WEDC website. Please visit

and

We hope you will make use of our resources in your own work in advocacy, implementation and general support to the aims of the International Year of Sanitation; and, more importantly, to maintaining and sustaining the vast increase in effort that is required from all of us beyond 2008.

With kind regards and all our best wishes
