Some other people have used finished compost as cover material in the indoor buckets. I expect it works as good as sawdust to cover odors but you probably want to find a source for dry leaves or something of the like for the outdoor bin. I've noticed that the chip pile from the tree trimmers tends to get a bit stinky all on it's own since it is still quite green.

Wood chips are not good for making compost, so you may be better off trying something already broken down.

We have been getting chips from a local tree trimmer and it's mixed (lots of leaf, particularly palm trimmings, and other more woody material) it doesn't seem to break down as fast as we would like -we try to use the finest stuff inside and the coarser in the outside bins - we have a local commerical composter down the road from us that doesn't use sludge or pallets mainly green waste from landscapers - they sell it by the truck load or cubic yard and we are wondering if anybody has any experience with this type of material -- i am wondering if there will be enough carbon in there as well as enough air space for good circulation - would it be better to just use that inside and some other coarser material in the outside bins. we produce about 7 - 5 gallon buckets of humanure a week and about 30+ gallons of fruit and veggie waste per week.

thanks for your assistance

Ryan
