Rufus - your camping policy is a great idea. People can have their own private, comfortable toilets; no pollution is made and everything is recycled. No need for toilet stalls or infrastructure. No odor, no pump trucks, no outhouses or pit latrines. The only thing left behind is a compost pile.

Humanure composters in NZ are almost certainly using pinus radiata sawdust for cover material in the bucket. This is a resinous sawdust. I have had difficulty getting temperature up in the compost bin just with using humanure, kitchen scraps and the odd weeds. What I have found works really well is to intersperse layers of humanure with lawnmower clippings. that seems to balance the mixture and high temps are reached and the compost breaks down quickly.

Camping families with their own buckets and sawdust would be most welcome to set up a tent at our place for a free affordable summer holiday. Not flash, absolutely no facilities except a water tap, but ten minutes walk from the beach. Lower NI, west coast. I could direct them to our compost pile to empty their bucket when needed.

Any other locations?

Any others in NZ doing this?

With a recent earthquake where city-dwellers were asked not to flush, a humanure toilet would be a far more sanitary option.
