A 20" compost thermometer is adequate for a backyard compost pile.

Is a 20" thermometer sufficiently long to use in a typical family-of-four bin (4 ft high, about 5 ft square)? Is a longer one (say 36") better?

My 3-compartment setup is nearing completion. Then it's on to building the loo, acquiring some sawdust and hay, and we'll be ready to go. Getting excited (and admittedly a bit apprehensive).
