Of course Joe is right. NOW is the time to start a pile. I start a new one every June 1st. That ensures that it is sufficiently large and well established to cook right along throughout the cold winter, but you really can start any time, so do it now!

You can start any time. The compost may wait until the conditions are right before it heats up, but it won't hurt for it to sit and slowly decompose (or even freeze) in the meantime.

My husband and I saw a humanure-type waste disposal system on a local farm. We were impressed and we're thinking seriously of starting a humanure system at home. We'll need to build the composting area, and I'm wondering if Autumn is a good time to start, or is it better to wait until spring? We're in Quebec, Canada, and I'm not sure the comost will get going properly if we start the pile in the autumn. Thanks!
