I tried coco coir and it worked fine in the sawdust toilet bucket keeping in odors, etc. I had it to damp when I first mixed up a brick with water, so I had to let it dry some before using. The only con that I see is price per brick compared to sawdust. The brick costs $3 for a couple gallons after expansion compared to $3 for a 35 gallon tote of sawdust. If you can't get sawdust and can get coir at a bulk price, I would go for it.
