Lester Brown is still hard at work pushing that Sisyphean stone of sustainability uphill. The Organic Consumers Association reprinted a chapter from his new book arguing for composting toilets to conserve and protect water. He promotes "advanced designs," but doesn't specify what those are. Humanure toilets surely should qualify for their effectiveness, simplicity, and affordability. Check out the good news at:

In the current August 2008 issue of Scientific American, the headline article is "Facing the Freshwater Crisis." They actually have an illustration of a "composting-type" toilet which is being developed in Sweden. Looks a lot more expensive and complicated than the Humanure system, but hopefully it will raise awareness.

Recently the US EPA released the National Water Program Strategy: Response to Climate Change, which includes an important section identifying water conservation as an important part of the Strategy. However, there is no reference to the use of composting toilet systems, which have the potential to save a lot of water, and reduce the amount of energy used in water transfer and wastewater treatment.
A public comment period is now open. Check out the draft Strategy and send comments to:
