Watch a video: How we make the Loveable Loo Humanure Toilet.
It's
as easy as 1,2,3 (okay, so there are nine steps, who's
counting?) We figure that you can build it for even less
than $25 if you're industrious and use recycled lumber
and hardware (or you can buy
one online).
Important:
Read This Before You Build...
A humanure toilet
is ONE of three components.
The system will NOT work
without all three components, which are:
1)
THE TOILET ITSELF. A sawdust toilet is a collection
toilet - the composting takes place in a separate outdoor
bin. Look
at the process. You have to empty
toilet receptacles. There are lots
of ways to make humanure toilets. Look at some owner-built humanure compost bins.
2)
A COMPOST BIN (a three-chambered bin is recommended, but one chamber will work).
See the process for
an example of this system. Look
at Jenkins compost bins. Look
at how they're used. Look at
some other
bins. Watch some videos showing humanure compost bins.
Buy a compost thermometer. Keep track of your compost temperature!
3)
COVER MATERIALS, are such things as sawdust, rotted leaves, peat
moss, weeds, hay, straw, leaves,or rice hulls, etc. Cover
materials are critical to the success of a humanure
toilet. NOTE: Food scraps, fats, oils, meats, and
any other discarded organic material you produce
can also go into the humanure compost pile. (Read
the book free online!) Buy
a copy.
