Microbiologists at Washington University in St. Louis recently performed one of the most detailed ever analyses of human fecal matter. One of the scientists performing the study, Jeffrey Gordon, remarked that "The density of colonization of the distal gut is just enormous." and that thus far "This is the densest bacterial ecosystem known in nature." The study hopes to help researchers better understand the diverse microbial communities each of us has in our colons and how they are evolving as a result of changing diets and lifestyles.
