I get coffee grounds from a local shop. They are wet and heavy. A five gallon bucket full may be too heavy to lift.
When you get your coffee grounds home, you can dry them out on a couple sheets of newspaper spread out on an old window screen.

We pick up coffee grounds for coffee shops. Some are more cooperative than others even within a chain. There is one particular chain that has special grounds for the garden stuff, one store may regularly bag up the grounds for customers to take while another is too lazy to bother and leaves their "grounds for the garden bucket empty"

Anyway, the coffee grounds make excelent cover for in the bucket when the sawdust runs out (this happened to us not long ago and shredded paper may be fine to cover liquid additions to the bucket but doesn't cover the smell of #2 so well.) Coffee grounds do have a habit of making the place smell like coffee and if they are moist, they will start to grow mold so I wouldn't store large amounts indoors. They are also great soil amendments all by themselves if you have some container plants in need of top dressing.

I'm even testing out using coffee grounds as top dressing over seeds in trays since the compost is sometimes a bit chunky for seed starting.

Well, Dr. Joe, are coffee grounds a good cover? We do have many great sources for them.

Every town has a bunch of Coffee Shops now and
also Brewpubs,,these places have loads of great
Organic or natural compost and humanure covering
materials that you can have just for the asking,
simply say"would you save the coffee grounds if i
bring in a five gallon bucket???,at each of the
Coffee Shops..coffee grounds make a great cover
material in your humanure bucket and its a great
soil conditioner too..same with the Rice and Hops
when the Brewpub makes Beer, ask them to set it
aside for you and you will have alot of Compost
