If the choice is to flush such things into the water supply or to compost them, I have to vote compost them. It seems to be the best way to deal with any of it. Of course some herbiside can cause compost to become rather enimical to your plants so beware where your cover materials come from.

As far as Meds etc in the compost. It seems that if one is taking the substance, then it will likely only become less concentraited when excreated, mixed with cover materials and composted, then mixed with soil before growing plants. Unless the plants being grown tend to seek and concentrate such substance, I'm not too worried. Still seems better than flushing it into the water supply and then drinking and watering the plants with it.

Pete, this is an important issue and it concerns all chemicals. The H Handbook says most man-made chemicals are broken down in the thermophylic process and that's great news, but there are reports that products such as the herbicide Atrazine does not break-down and can pass through compost intact and cause damage to certain plant families, ie., tomatoes, etc.

This product has been banned in Europe- ironically where it was formulated and now in the U.S. in some states.

The efficacy of the bacterially heated compost process is far superior to most any other process, but I suppose when it comes to man-made chemicals, they have to be studied on a case by case basis, therefore, it's best to avoid chemicals in the first place.

Thank you for the Great Book!

A recent homeowner, I'm faced with the dilemma of finally being in the position
to make good of the ethics I've claimed to have for so long. My partner,
baby, and I are turning grass into food forest, and installing a gray water
system, and an outdoor, solar heated shower, with a shitter for compost. One
topic your book did not address was what happens to the synthetic medicine one
ingests. In particular, estrogen in the birth control pill, as visitors and
boarders may be on "the pill". I have heard that (and also read in your book)
that the hormones leaking into the water table (presumably mostly from cattle)
are rapidly making the male gender extinct. My understanding is that this
synthetic estrogen does not decompose as quickly as one would like it to. Does
the thermophilic bacterial have any effect? If not, certainly we would be
exposing ourselves to estrogen when eating the crops growing in the compost.
Additionally, I imagine that you would not encourage anyone on chemotherapy to
use your toilet. With the aging of America and the predominance of old age
sustained through the use of pharmaceuticals, this will become more of an issue
as time rolls on. I am very interested to hear what is known about this.

Additionally, this is really a pisser - after reading your book, I realized
that our garden and solar shower are defined on the ground by pressure treated
lumber (which will be removed tomorrow). Can't people be more responsible??!!
Yes, this lumber preexisted our purchase of the house, but I used it without
thinking... thanks again for the heads up. So, I presume that if I remove the
lumber that is enough, and removing the dirt that the water drains into would
be unnecessary? What do you think?

Pete, Ly-Lan and Tekuru
