After the tumbleweeds are dried enough to be blown around, one way, I have crushed the tumbleweeds in the past is to pile them up and get some long wide boards and lay the boards over them and start walking back and forth over the boards. Eventually it will reduce the size of the tumblweeds down to a inch or two. It may take a little time but it works.

I have thistles. If I cover bucket deposits with these thistle weeds, will the composting process kill the seeds or will the seeds all sprout in my garden after I spread the compost? Also I have many tumbleweeds that blow and collect along the fence. I'm wondering about layering these into the compost bin, but I think they would need to first be crushed into a denser mass. Anybody out there have any experience with composting thistles or crushing tumbleweeds? Thanks.
