"Manure for the millions"a pamphlet written for
English country gardeners was one of the works of
Rev.Henry Moule who designed Earth Closets to
counter the water Closets which were in use and
which were causing Cholera epidemics,,sifted Soil
was dropped into a receptacle where the droppings
fall,a lever or footpedal or even a mechanism that
automatically dropped a measured amount when one
stood up from the seat, ashes were also used from
the woodstoves and fireplaces."EarthClosets"A good
idea whose time has finally come..Hurrah!!

Do you have any idea where one might obtain a copy of that pamphlet?

This Earth Closet really addresses the problem
many folks seem to be having finding suitable
sawdust,,many have ashes, and just about anybody
can find some clean soil, unless they live in the
big city and don't have a car,,but even they can
take a bus and a canvas bag with a trash bag liner
and dig some good soil from a park or farm.theres
a nice park by a lake where i live where no one
has lived since the native americans,so that the
soil will not be contaminated by coal cinders or
fuel oil or auto oil changing,etc...thanx

Yes, I did do a Google search and did see the Earth Closet in mint condition with instructions. The only thing Moule didn't know about was the intestinal parasites that require a period of time in soil in order to reproduce (round worms, hook worms, etc.). That's the problem with relying on soil. It will mask odor and will work much like sawdust, but it won't support composting, which is what is needed to destroy those parasites.

but if this "night soil" is then mixed with leaves, straw, hay, tree trimmings, and then composted it should work right?

Thanks Joe,I think it would be great if someone
could drawup some plans for fancy type furniture
quality or just rustic or even oriental designs,,
even the idea of having a hopper full of sawdust
dispense a measured amount to the delight and
edification of the millions might make the Bucket
a little more acceptable to a wider audience,,,,
We must remove our wastes to the earth, for its
fertilizer value can revitalize our depleted soils
and to save all that water wasted everyday in
our increasingly parched world..Go Humanure!!
