I don't think so.

We used wood shavings the first few years in our double chambered direct-over-the-pile system. The wood shavings were absolutely undecomposed after one year of the pile being unused, while all toilet paper, newspaper, office paper, cotton tampons, cotton parts of sanitary napkins, and hair were gone without a trace. The wood shavings were not paper-thin; they were what the carpenter and local sawmill gave us.

Will an electric wood plane make shavings that can be crumbled like leaves? Would they be fine enough for composting?

They would be ok for composting but they won't crumble like leaves.

They will compost, but not very fast - maybe over years.

Is it not possible to set up a wood planer to produce something more like sawdust?

I'm using wood planings right now in an office toilet system I'm just now setting up. It's hemlock lumber and the planings have been sitting outside for months. I will let you know what happens (in a year or so).
